IELTS Task 2: Today, the high sales of popular consumer goods reflect the power of advertising and not the real needs of the society in which they are sold. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Nowadays, people earn more money than ever before with the development of economy, which allows them buy more than they need. Whether this phenomenon is attributed to advertisements has become controversial issue. My view is thot while advertising does play a central role in this result, other factors are not able to be overlooked

It is true that we can see variety of advertisements wherever we go in the consumer society, which may lead to overconsumption of citizens. This means that excessive exposure to these advertisements is likely to enable consumers to buy some goods which are recommended for some characteristics such as highly- affordable or strict standards. For example, people purchase new refrigerator known for its low-emission as well as cost-effective.As a consequence, they have to dispose of the former one which actually can be used.

On the other hand, it is vital for individuals to gain some information from advertising when they have no idea about this kind of goods.Once Consumers want to purchase some goods which they did not understand relevant details especially some cutting-edge devices, they will be in a dilemma .Conversely,by surfing advertisements, consumers are able compare the price, quality and even weight. As a result, they are more likely to gain admirable goods that satisfy their needs.

In addition, other factors are also responsible for overconsumption. First of all, citizens can earn higher salary in the prosperous world. The means that they have more disposable money to buy everything they want. Secondly, the rapid development of technology has led to the lower cost of production so that the goods are more affordable than before. Finally, individuals are not of environmentally conscious so that they are not willing to go green by lessening some unnecessary commodities.

In conclusion, while advertisements are certainly affect consumers, other considerations should be give more attention.
