    TOEFL TPO54 Integrated Writing

The author lists three possible solutions which can stop the increase of the salt level in the Salton Sea. But the professor believes that none of them can work.

Firstly, the author states that using desalination devices can remove the salt from the lake directly. However, the professor asserts that although these devices can evaporate the water and remind the salt, it has a health problem. Some of the salt can be toxic when being heat they can produce some harmful air. So these devices cannot be used.

Secondly, the author holds the view that adding ocean water by using pipelines and canals into the lake will dilute the salt level. But the professor disagrees with this method because of the pipelines and canals. The local government cannot build pipelines and canals in this place because they lack enough resources. And the nearest pipelines and canals are one hundred kilometers away. Therefore, this is not an effective method.

Finally, the author also thinks that building some walls to divide the lake into several sections and control the main section can solve this problem. But the professor says that the wall can only work for a short time. This area has many geological activities such as earthquakes which can destroy the wall. And if the wall is destroyed by the earthquake, the sections will be mixed up together and back up to before.
