TOEFL TPO 22 Integrated Writing: ethanol is not a good replacement for gasoline.

The author lists 3 reasons that ethanol fuel is not a good replacement for gasoline. However, the professor believes that none of them are reasonable.

Firstly, the author points out the fact that burning ethanol can produce carbon dioxide just like gasoline. But the professor states that the ethanol is made from the plant. And the plant can absorb carbon dioxide themselves which reduce the carbon dioxide. So the first reason can be wrong.

Secondly, the professor challenges that the plant which is used to produce the ethanol is not the farm animals’ food. Most of the ethanol is producted from the cellule which the cows do not eat. So the ethanol does not reduce the available plant for the livestock. The second reason from the author which the ethanol can make some source of food for animals disappear is not reasonable.

Finally, the author holds the view that the price of ethanol can be a problem for the government and if the government stops reducing the tax of the producer of the ethanol, its price will increase above the gasoline. However, the professor points out that although the government supports ethanol, it always needs to do that. And it is predicted that the production of the ethanol will increase as 3 times as today. And ethanol’s price will reduce by 40 percent at the same time.
