TOEFL Writing Topic: TPO 31 integrated writing feathers of Sinosauropteryx

The reading and the lecture both discuss whether the founding around the skeleton, fine lines, were the feathers of Sinosauropteryx or not. The author of the reading states that those fine lines were not the Sinosauropteryx’s feathers. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. She is of the opinion that those statements are unconvincing.

To begin with, the author argues that those fine lines were useless to the dinosaur. The article also mentions that the lines were the evidence of the decomposed skin which turned into fiber and was well preserved underground. The specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. She claims that the decomposed skin was not just fiber. In addition, the functional structures of other animals were well preserved around the dinosaur’s fossils, and so was Sinosauropteryx.

Secondly, the writer suggests that the fine lines did not belong to any part of the dinosaur’s structures. In the article, it is said that the fine lines were more like the dinosaur’s frills which were ornamental-shaped. The lecturer, however, rebuts this suggestion by mentioning that there were different chemical components between frills and feathers. She elaborates this idea by saying that the beta-cartain which was a type of protein only existed in feathers not frills, and there was the evidence found that the beta-cartain was discovered in the fossils.

Finally, the author posits that the functions of feathers were not for flying or keeping the body temperature. Moreover, the lines were not located in an appropriate site which made it less useful as the feathers. In contrast, the lecture’s position is that the functions of feathers were not just only helping to fly or regulating temperature but also displaying to the partners. She took peacock as an example, and believed that the function of peacock’s tail was for meeting the partner. As a result, the lines were colorfully composed of white and orange which was similar to the function of peacock’s tail. [324 words]
