    TPO 53 – High Taxes

The reading passage proposes that the government should impose higher taxes on cigarettes and other unhealthy products. However, the professor thinks the provided reasons and suggestions can be challenged.

To begin with, the article mentions that higher taxes would discourage people from indulging in unhealthy products and cigarettes. However, the professor tends to believe that higher taxes would cause people to buy cheaper and lower-standard cigarettes. As a result, people would present greater health problems. Similarly, for unhealthy products, individuals might continue buying them even though the prices are higher than before. This would lead to less money they could spend on other healthy products and activities.

Secondly, the reading passage believes that higher taxes would be fair since people buying unhealthy products are more likely to get sick and should be responsible for a higher contribution of medical costs. Yet, the professor thinks the higher taxes are unfair because the article does not take people’s income into account. Since both rich and poor people buy cigarettes and unhealthy products, a higher tax would not cause a huge issue to the rich people, but it would impose a burden on people with lower income.

Last but not least, the article says that a higher rate of taxation could increase the revenue for the government. In another word, the government could invest more money to benefit the public welfare. However, the professor disagrees with this statement. Instead, she thinks the government would not want to lose the money which could be millions of dollars. Because of this, the government would be less likely to ban cigarettes and other unhealthy products.

In light of the reasons above, the professor does not believe that the proposed higher taxes is a feasible solution to the problem of cigarettes and unhealthy products.
