TPO37 integrated writing: One of the threats to endangered sea turtle species is the use of nets by commercial shrimp-fishing boats.

In the reading passage, the author claims that there are three aspects of why TEDs should be criticized, while in the lecture, the lecturer expresses opposite ideas.

To begin with, the author holds that the turtles get trapped only rarely but the TED costs too much. However, the lecturer refutes that even though for one shrimper the amount is little, the whole shrimp industry will have a big influence on the total amount of the sea turtles which are endangered animals. Therefore, it’s necessary to protect them even though there are some costs for the shrimpers.

Moreover, the author thinks that there are some alternative methods such as shortening the time limit that shrimp boats are allowed to keep their nets underwater. Instead the lecturer retorts that it is very difficult to force the time because people cannot monitor the time limit. Therefore, shortening the time underwater will not work.

Finally, the author puts forwards that for the larger species of turtles, they cannot fit through the escape passage. On the contrary, the lecturer rebuts that it is not a problem to modify the escape passage and let the larger ones go through. As a result, the problem will be solved.
