    TPO40 Integrated Writing

The passage and the listening part both discuss whether Venus is suitable for human living. The reading part points out it is impossible. On the contrary, the lecture disagrees with these reasons and provides one solution to solve problems. And this solution is establishing floating station about 50 kilometers above the Venus’s surface.

Firstly, the reading part shows that owing to the atmospheric pressure is very higher than the pressure on the Earth, it can crush all things landing on it. However, according to the professor in the lecture says that even though the pressure at Venus’s surface is much higher than the Earth’s, the pressure at the 50km high is equal to the pressure on the Earth’s surface. So, if space station is at about 50 kilometers high, it will not make spacecraft crushed.

Secondly, the passage points out that there are no water and oxygen but lots of carbon dioxide and other gases. Therefore, people in that environment do not have water to drink and oxygen to breath. While the lecture shows that water and oxygen can be produced by chemical reactions using carbon dioxide. Therefore, people do not need to send these stuff from the Earth, which is not practical.

Thirdly, the reading part holds the view that little sunlight can reach the Venus’s surface, so electricity will be in shortage. But the lecture says that the clouds is not very thick, hence  sunlight can get through them and reach the Venus’s surface. Also, it is true that the clouds reflects most sunlight, the station can use them as well to generate electricity. Thus, lacking sunlight is not a problem.
