When students study these days, many of them also do other things at the same time, for example, use their phones, spend time on the Internet, or listen to music. Do you agree or disagree that such activities have a bad effect on learning?

I hold the opinion that when students are studying, using phones and the Internet would not negatively affect students studying.

A voice arises that using phones will distract students’ attention when they study. Ironically, it depends on how students use phones. Students usually have many group studies and discussions, which is able to enhance their communication and team working skills. Using their phone to interact with their team members, such as exchanging ideas and helping each other solve problems, they will obtain valuable chances to complete their group work as well as form strong relationships with their classmates. Hence, the advantages of using phones far outweigh its disadvantages.

First of all, the Internet is an effective tool to help students finish their assignments. As we all know, most homework and assignments ask students to do research, which means they need to read tons of references and materials, and then do analysis around a topic by themselves. In this way, students are able to get online and search for some information or collect data for their research, which will contribute greatly to producing excellent work and getting a good score. Without the Internet, they might spend much more time on their work and decrease work efficiency and effectiveness.

In addition, it is better for students to study accompanied by music. It is widely acknowledged that listening to music can help people release their stress and get relaxed. When students focus on their studying for an extended time, they may feel tired and stressed. Therefore, taking a break and listening to light music is a great way to free their mind from what they are dealing with, thus they will focus better on their studying and be more creative and energetic afterward. In contrast, they will gradually lose their interest in studying as a result, which is harmful to their long-term learning.
