Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Young people today have no influence on the important decisions that determine the future of society as a whole. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

It is widely accepted that people of all ages should play a part in making important social decisions. All peoples’ opinions should be taken into account. Some argue that young people today lose their voice in important decisions that determine the future of society as a whole. As far as I’m concerned, however, young people are a powerful group when it comes to social decision making.

To start with, social opinion is largely expressed by social media today, of which young people take control. Young people are more familiar with modern technologies like Internet and mobile phones and tend to spend more time on social media such as Twitter, Instagram and Weibo than the elderly citizen. Young people, who feel free to express their thoughts on social platforms, make up the dominant part of Internet population. Therefore, what the social media express as a whole is largely what young people believe. Decision makers of the society have to take account of social opinions expressed by social media, and as a result, young people have huge impact on social decision making.

In addition, young people possess great social awareness and take an active part in public affairs due to their better education background. The last four decades have witnessed great development in China’s economy and consequently the education system has made great progress. More percentage of young people are well-educated than the previous generations, which gives rise to their excellent social awareness. Young people today show great concerns about all parts of society, from local community to national affairs. For instance, debate competition is popular in universities. Competitors debate on a public affair, proposing pros and cons of a social policy from all possible aspects. Not only do debate competitions analyses the practicability and effectiveness of a specific social decision, but also raise public awareness towards social affairs. Awareness and participation finally lead to social power, don’t they?

Young people today make a powerful voice on social media and demonstrate great social awareness. They form a considerable social group that exerts great influence on important social decision.
