Colleges and universities play an important role in education systems, and the use of educational budget has been widely discussed. Although some people claim financial budget should prioritize classes and libraries, I firmly agree with the statement that sport and social activities are also essential and should be equally supported.

We understand academic education will always be the core of a university. Sports and activities should by no means take the place of a focus on academic study. Taking into account the need for graduation and employment, students work hard to learn professional knowledge and spend the most time in classes and libraries. Thus, it is common that universities will spend a lot to purchase updated books and fulfill academic requirements. However, in most universities, there are also plenty of sport clubs and social groups which require the same amount of financial support to build venues or buy equipment.

In addition, social activities and sports can help students foster social skills. In modern society, many businesses benefit from teamwork, where team members should be able to communicate and cooperate effectively. Sports and social activities in school provide students with a great opportunity to practice skills in social interaction. For example, by playing basketball in a team, students can develop a sense of belonging and experience team spirit, which are quite substantial for their careers.

Finally, social activities and sports can make students healthy and energetic to live and learn better. Nowadays, the increasing pressure on students requires them to take not only classes but also much extra-curricular training. Consequently, they often feel exhausted and even suffer from physical diseases. It can be seen on campus more and more students wearing glasses, and too much time reading books or facing screens makes their eye problems even worse. Taking activities outside is a good way to relax and keep fit. For instance, by playing badminton with my classmates after class, I always feel refreshed and resume my schoolwork with higher efficiency later on.

In summary, sports and social activities are an indispensable part of campus life and contribute to students’ health and social skills. So there is no doubt that colleges and universities should spend enough money to support them just like classes and libraries.
