The chart indicates a range of impoverished families living in Australia in 1999.
In general, households of single adults and those with children were more likely to be living in poverty than those who had couples.
On average, the proportion of people living in poverty in all households accounted for 11%, comprising almost 2 million people. Those consisting of single parent and single adult took up the largest and these figures were nearly double the proportion of poor people, with 21% and 19% respectively.
Couples tended to be better off , with lower poverty levels for couples without children(7%) than those with children(12%).It is noticeable that for both types of households with children, a higher than average proportion was living in poverty.
Senior citizens were generally less likely to be poor in all the household groups, though once again the trend favoured the senior couples(only 4%) rather than single elderly people(6%).
