After high school, students should take at least one year to work or travel before beginning college.

When graduating from high school, students could choose to postpone the admission of university for one year during which they could experience things they are interested in, prepare for the future life path and so on. This year is usually called gap year, of which the pros and cons seem to be an enduring debate. From my perspective, to take a gap year is not always a favorable choice.

Admittedly, taking the opportunity of gap year to work can be beneficial to students. Some students might feel out of touch from the rest of the world and they are eager to explore the real world right after high school. By taking different internships and jobs, students can find out what they really want to pursue in the future. Even though the experience will not make their resume shine, however, it will help students figure out their future career path and motivate them to work in the right direction.

Nevertheless, having a clear plan for gap year to work or travel in most students’ situation is an ideal state. In fact, most of the students haven’t thought it through whether or not they should take a year off, ending up wasting valuable time. They might just attend countless parties during the year. And for others, the simple reason why they take a year off is that they were rejected from their favorite universities. Both reasons are untenable and will eventually make students careen of their career path.

What’s more, the obvious drag of taking a gap year is that the students will lose momentum in the academic work. After all, some students just decide to take a year off recklessly and do nothing during the year. They have no exposure to schoolwork, so the skills they had, such as essay writing skills, and knowledge they learned in high school will be easily forgotten. Thus, their brain will get rusty and the transition back to school can be extremely difficult. The lack of proficiency and mental sharpness will make it hard for students to keep up with the tough schoolwork.

    Score: ungraded

    Issues:

    1. About 40% of the sentences exceed 20 words. Shorten/split them.
    2. About 15% of the sentences are passive. Convert some of them into their active counterparts.

I will send you screenshots to illustrate specific problems/errors.
