All university students should be required to take history courses no matter what their study of field is.

Hardly can an agreement be reached when it comes to whether all university students should be required to take history courses. Some people claim that learning some history courses contributes a lot to the patriotic sentiment. Yet things do not always happen the way people hope. In fact, requiring all students to take history courses quite likely triggers unfavorable reactions among students and is not a wise option.

On the one hand, students have taken abundant history courses in their high schools. In reality, these courses are fairly enough to cover all critical history events and cultivate patriotism. In the meantime, as a saying goes, too much water drowned the miller. If students need to learn the history over and over again, they might regard the history as something of little importance. For example, nowadays in China, all university students need to take Marxism courses, which we have been taught for six years if courses in high school are taken into account as well. Nobody feel curious and interested in it, despite the Marxism courses in university did contain something different and more profound. What’s worse, there is a high absenteeism of such courses.

On the other hand, the time of university students is quite limited. Some need to take a part time job to make ends meet. Some devote themselves to the lab research to prepare for the further academic development. Everyone is tight-scheduled and how could they be willing to squeeze time for extra history courses? For instance, my roommate decided to participate in overseas graduate programs. She is struggling to balance the time spent on courses and tests such as TOEFL and GRE. Even though history courses become compulsory, it is of high possibility that she will skip most classes. Without satisfying solution to schedule conflicts, added history courses will be nothing but a waste of time and education resources.

From what has been discussed above, we can safely reach the conclusion that requiring all university students to take history courses is not a wise choice.
