Nowadays, it is controversial that it is necessary for all universities to request students take history courses. While some argue that this request should be carried out, I am of the opinion that  all the students should decide whether to take history courses by themselves.

To begin with, those who advocate all students in university should take history courses would argue that mastering the knowledge of history makes it easier for students to make choices. Some documents of big events in the history provide people with substantial experiences. These experiences could lead all the students some rules to predict what will happen in the future, which increases the possibilities for students to have a correct prediction.

However, for students in many other fields, taking history courses would lead low efficiency of their own study. The history courses would cost much time of students to take, which in turn reduces the time for them to devoted to their own major. Therefore, students will find it is hard to concentrate on their professional classes and tasks. Instead, spending enough time on one thing, could improve the efficiency. For example, Tu Youyou, a Chinese chemist who spent more than 50 years in researching the treatment of malaria. The long time research improve the efficiency of her study and she could concentrate on her experiment. Finally, she find the artemisinin and help millions of people survive from the terrible disease.

Additionally, deciding whether taking history courses depending on students’ field of study could improve the development of whole society. With less students to take the history courses, the need for the money on cultivating teachers would actually decrease. Thus, the money could be used in much more critical aspects, especially the technology which would make people’s life become more convenient. For example, many Earth scientists and physicists have been attemping to model the Earth climate on computer. However, back in 1950s, the poor computation created a huge challenge for them to continue their study. It is the financial support of the government that causes the final success.
