    Requirement:

Write a response in which you discuss your views on the policy and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider the possible consequences of implementing the policy and explain how these consequences shape your position.

Should faculty of colleges and universities commits themselves to working outside the academic world in professional germane to the courses they teach? It would be knotty to balance the time commitment between science research and instruction activity, not to mention the time spending on industry. From my own point of view, i agree to the suggestion to a large extent because the exploration in industry related to their field of study, can ameliorate their teaching quality and researchful depth. However, the recommendation may not be appropriate to the faculty in all field, so i cannot fully endorse the proposal.

It is not uncommon for us to see the theory and technology of industry is ahead of that of academia in some cutting-edge fields.  Professors who engage in non-academic work could have a more comprehensive knowledge of their own research field and be awere of the need of industry, thus, those of society. By working in the subject possessed a colossal societal value, professors can not only gain more social recognition but also yield better academic achievements; in addition, these works would make grater contribution to society. For instance, if a professor specialized in biology have a chance to work at a pharmacutical company, he or she will have a better understanding to the company’s current need, perhaps the pathology of a certain disease and the measure to battle it. After ending the incumbency in industry, he or she can prob into the academic topic with more deeper perception, which will promote the advancement of science and technology. Therefore, when professors working outside the academic goes smoothly, it will get the best of both worlds.

Being well acquainted with the need of industry can play a pivotal role in instruction. Teachers who fully keep pace with industry and know the specific skill for crtain industrial position may better prepare their students for jobs market from the perspective of industry. Compared to the faculty never leaves school, a computer science faculty participating in non-academic work will, very likely, understand industrial requirements and what programming qualities are designed to the rapid-changing field. He or she will be able to share his or her insights with students, helping them gaining advantage and competitiveness. In a word, teachers working in industry may help to relay employer’s demand to potential employees, which benefits their students.

Despite the benefits gained from working out of academic, the situation that faculties are not applicable to participate in non-academic works in some fields can not be ignorable. Some researchful realms possess inadequate bond with industry. It is hard-pressed for faculties who engage in elementary theoretical research to find industrial professions, like mathematics or cosmology and if they do, the social benefits would be nominal if industry shows litte interest on their researchs. For example, there is no a physical company hiring faculties to explore the theory in cosmology; thus, faculties in those fields working outside of academia seems to be unproductive and would not carry out commensurate value.

To sum up, faculty working in non-academic area may have a positive influence on their research and teaching. One the other hand, it may receive undesirable and fruitless result when colleges and universities compel faculty(from disciplines with poor industrial connections to do so) to work in industrial fields that are poorly related to their research topics. Therefore i can not fully agree the recommendation and its availablity still remains further discussing.
