Do you think scientists should be required to allow others to use their inventions for free?

We may all have wondered a world where scientific discoveries could exchange without barriers among all researchers and consumers, and all possible limits on a research such as fees for patents should be canceled. But contrary to what many people believe, paying charges for patented inventions not only protects scientists’ rights, but also prevents the abuse of technology.

The existence of a patent could let an institution prevent some uses of invention that are deemed unethical. Since charging for using an invention symbolizes the ownership of it, free access to an invention to some extent indicates no one can supervise who will use the invention and for what purpose, which will result in horrible problems. For example, the abuse of biotechnology has been a controversial issue as some profit-only companies attempted to use the technology on human embryos.

Of course, inconvenience may be caused when institutions have to pay a fee for the owner of the inventions. But, in the first place, it is virtually a relatively small fee that most academic institutions can afford. Moreover, the advantages it offers far overwhelm the drawbacks it may bring about. Thus, charging for using an invention essentially maintains a healthy academic environment.

Charging for using an invention also motivates scientists’ innovation as well as guarantees their rights. Scientific research is a tough job. Despite the pursuit of truth and recognition, scientists also crave financial rewards to meet life needs and improve living conditions. We all know that one who contributes more to society should get more pay. This compensation system not only ensures social equity but also stimulates people to work harder to make a better life. Allowing scientists to earn money through their innovations shows respect for their intellectual work and for the hard work they have paid.

Having considered all the arguments above, it would be wise to say that scientists have the right for their inventions, considering both the development of the academic environment and the well-being of individuals.

Some people think that scientists should allow others to use their inventions for free. It may be true that financial interests in inventions may distort or limit some scientific research. But it is important to realize that letting scientists have an economic stake in their inventions not only fosters innovation, but also protects intellectual property rights. Indeed, I believe scientists should take ownership and charge for their inventions.

Financial returns from the novel outcomes of science encourages scientists to do research. Charging for the inventions means they can receive extra salary support for their work. Furthermore, it represents the protection of ideas and recognition for their work. Without receiving the full benefits of their inventions, scientists would lack sense of fulfillment, and would focus less on research and development.

I also realize that there’s another dimension: with free access to any invention comes unethical application of technology. It’s tempting to think that if people could use inventions for free, these technologies would have a wider range of applications. But the truth is that some companies may take advantage of these inventions and thus cause some ethical problems. The existence of intelligence property could let an institution prevent some uses of inventions that are deemed unethical.

Although it is widely acknowledged that financial interests can threaten the integrity of science. It is worth noting that scientific research is essentially a form of business, involving investments of money, human resources, facilities and capital. That is to say, eliminating financial interests is not a realistic option. After all, the benefits of charging for inventions far outweigh the drawbacks of having it.

Based on the arguments offered above, it is wise to say that scientists should be allowed to charge for their inventions. And the best approach to dealing with financial interests in research is to implement policies designed to minimize their potential drawbacks.
