Educational institutions are salutary when we are confused to choose fields of study for our futures. They provide instructions to help us make the choice. Instead of blindly encouraging students to pursue fields that will prepare them for lucrative careers, in my point of view, instructions of educational institutions should be a guidance for students, letting them know how to keep a balance between their own interests and the need of job markets.

Indeed, jobs, salaries, and the development potential of a field are critical to us when choosing fields of study. With decent jobs, chances are high for us to be with our lovers. With a higher salary, we can provide our lovers with a life of higher quality. Just think about who is willing to marry a man living in a small and old rental apartment with a part-time job and meager salary, only enough to support the rent and daily expenses? Our most imperative and essential goal of life is to survive, to eradicate hunger and poverty, to own a house where we can live and stay from danger, and to be with our spouses who will accompany us for a life long, then, based on which, we may have the right to talk about interests and dreams. Stable jobs and salaries are exactly the insurances of them.

Furthermore, interests are always fostered during working and studying. In other words, We can not say whether we have a passion for a field before we step into it. Our interests are always based on our knowledge of this world. As our knowledge changes, our interests are also mutable. It is not rare that we get tired of a field of interest after getting familiar with it. Also, it is often the case that we fall in love with a field, unfamiliar at the beginning after we go deep into it and feel its glamour. In this sense, focusing on our careers and jobs in prior is a more reasonable option.

However, the importance of jobs and careers does not mean that educational institutions should ignore what students are interested in when helping them to make the choice. Never forget an old saying: interest is our best teacher. Passions for a field is the strongest motivation for us to learn in which steady progress will be accumulated. Once we have mastered a field after enough accumulations, sooner or later, we will succeed. Many famous scientists like Isaac Newton, Gauss, Hilbert, and Einstein, are examples. All of them make huge contributions to humans and achieved great success. Their passions for science, I believe, are the most important factor in achieving success.

On the other hand, many negative emotions are originated from doing what we don’t like. When these emotions are accumulated day by day, chances are high for us to generate some unhealthy thoughts. Recent research about psychological health in Tokyo indicates that the most important factor of the high rate of suicide among Japanese young people in recent years is their pressures in career. Confusions, disappointments, and pessimism are very likely to be developed when the young are doing what they are not good at and thus berated by their boss. Therefore, considering our mental health, educational institutions should not ignore our interests.

Above all, educational institutions should take both students’ interests and lucrative careers into consideration and make a balance. Let the balance shift to any side is not good for students’ futures.
