Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Governments should spend more money in support of the arts than in support of athletics such as state-sponsored Olympic teams. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

With the enrichment of people’s entertainment, art and sport have now become two significant elements in the life of human beings and would influence a country regarding their population’s daily amusement and culture. While some people advocate that governments should spend more funds in support of the arts, others believe athletics worth more attention and investment. From my perspective, I disagree with the statement.

To start with, artworks are more difficult to understand for the public compared to sports, which means that it is harder for people to attain joy from art. Sports have a characteristic that enables everyone to easily accept them. Basketball, for example, can create an exciting atmosphere that will infect people who even have never watched a basketball game and know nothing about it. Artworks, on the contrary, are relatively hard to interpret and understand for someone who is not familiar with the field. The artwork of Van Gogh, for instance, is difficult to have a deep insight into it and feel a strong emotional resonance without thoroughly learning of his life experience. As a result of the lack of excitement of insights and resonances, people will likely feel boring when appreciating his artworks instead of being impressed by them.

Besides, support of support could encourage citizens to live a healthy lifestyle, which can enhance the government’s fame. Exercising is significant to human beings, while in modern society regular people do little physical activities. With increasing input into the sports field, a trend of exercise may prevail. If the first thing that people see when they turn up their television is how many awards that the state-sponsored Olympic teams have won, it is highly possible that their enthusiasm towards sports will be ignited. Thus, people can keep fit and keep healthy, which in turn, raises the government’s reputation.

In a nutshell, it is wise for the government to invest in the field of sports rather than in the field of art.
