IELTS TASK 2: It is important for children to learn the difference between right and wrong at an early age. Punishment is necessary to help them learn this distinction. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion? What sort of punishment should parents and teachers be allowed to use to teach good behavior to children?

Nowadays , an increasing number of parents focus on children` education. However, whether punishment is necessary for parents to help children distinguish right from wrong has caused a heated debate. My view is that appropriate punishment is beneficial to the growth of children.

Firstly, it is obvious that for most children, some punishment can help them get rid of bad habits and develop good behavior patterns, which will enable them to become qualified citizen in the future. This is because, after appropriate punishment, they will know that  their behavior is wrong and they will not do it a second time. If children show inappropriate behavior, parents can ask children to write a diary related the reasons why the behavior is bad and what is the right actions as a small punishment to help children develop correct notion.

Moreover, focusing on suitable punishment can develop children`s good character. For example, a number of spoiled children tend to be self-centered . If parents do not punish their children when children show no respect to other individuals and only care for themselves, the children is not only ready to lose friends but also become an uncooperative worker who is not welcome  in the future.

That is not to say parents is ought to use punishment frequently when children behave badly. There are some parents who usually use punishment or even violence to force their children to obey the rules, which hurt children both physically and mentally and show their children an unsuitable way to handle problems. Parents should treat children patiently and gently instead of violently.

In summary, educating children with proper punishment is justified. Meanwhile, punishment abuse has to be prohibited. Only by doing so, can we ensure the healthy development of children.
