It is more important for students to understand ideas and concepts than it is for them to learn facts. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

It is known to all that learning facts and learning ideas and concepts are both essential to students. however, when it comes to which one is more important, people’s opinions vary. I firmly hold the opinion that learning facts is more important than learning ideas and concepts.

One advantage of learning facts is that facts boost the development of ideas and concepts. As a matter of fact, Ideas and concepts are used to explain facts, without which they’ll no longer exist. But it is obvious that people cannot find out all the facts of the world. Once new facts are observed and researched, ideas and concepts that have already existed are put into challenge. On the one hand, old ideas and concepts are improved and revised, on the other hand, new ideas and concepts are raised. Through this progress, learning facts can help people raise better ideas and concepts.

On the other hand, learning facts can cultivate students’ habit of respecting facts and paying attention to practice. Retrospecting the history of science, respecting facts and practice is widely regarded as one of the most important virtues. Take my teacher professor Lee as an example, when he was doing a biology research on an island near wast Africa, he found that the leg structure of a kind of grasshopper is quite alike to those in west Asia. To ordinary people, this was nothing but a useless. However, He didn’t ignore this detailed observation and made thorough examination of it. Finally, after years of study, he raised a surprising theory explaining the migration of this insect, which was an astonishing academic achievement. Had it not been the attitude of professor Lee’s respecting facts, he would not have found such discovery.

In a nutshell, concerning all the points mentioned above, I maintain that learning facts is more important than learning ideas and concepts.
