Nowadays some older people choose to live in retirement communities with other people, rather than living with their adult children. Is it a positive or negative development？

Some old people choose to live in retirement communities with other people, rather than living with their adult children. I completely agree that this is a wise practice to resolve the ageing issue.

The first reason that retirement homes should be approved is because of the time storage of young people. In a fast-paced society with fierce competition, young people are sometimes forced to devote a lot of time to their work, and spending time with families becomes unrealistic. Therefore, it seems to be a good choice for the old to go to old people’s homes which can offer plenty of food, 24-hour nursing service and entertainment facilities. This renders old people a good life there.

The second reason that retirement homes should be approved is because of family conflicts. It is clear that the lifestyles of the young and the old are severely different. For example, old people may prefer a peaceful and quiet life, while young people may prefer a life full of excitement and surprises. If they live together, old people may often have different opinions with their children, and conflicts might often happen. These kinds of conflicts puts the family tie into tension. Retirement homes can easily solve this problem. Not living together means old and young people can live in their own life styles, resulting in less conflict.

In summary, I believe that retirement homes are a more appropriate environment for the old. However, they are not a paradise without care and visits from family members.
