Requiring students to have discussions in class is a waste of time.

Some people hold the view that requiring students to discuss during the class is a waste of time. As the efficiency of listening to teachers directly seems higher, so it’s not necessary to do so. However, the discussion is actually crucial to the learning process. Because it plays an indispensable role in understanding the knowledge and developing other skills.

Some professors let their students to say their opinions about some questions. So in case we are asked, but don’t know what to say, we have to look up relevant information before the class. This requirement urges us to study initiatively, and have a better understanding about the knowledge. It also trains us to have abilities to learn by our own by using Internet or reading books.

Moreover, the most obvious distinction between just listening to the lecture and discussion is about the interaction. During the discussion, we convey our thoughts to others, and hear voices of different people from diverse backgrounds. And when we can’t agree with each other, we will debate or make compromises. This is a perfect opportunity to broaden our social circles and develop skills in presentation and negotiation. We will definitely benefit from those abilities when working for companies in the future.

And that’s not all of having discussions. As interactions are usually more intense, we will stay more motivated and focus closely on the topic. And when all the students are highly concentrated, it is the best time for the teachers to summarize. With great preparations and fully discussions, students can absorb knowledge effectively and willingly.

All in all, as I mentioned above, discussion offers many advantages. It helps students gain a better understanding of the knowledge and develop many useful skills. And it also reduces the workforce of teachers. Simply put, I don’t think that requiring students to have discussions in class is a waste of time.
