Some people think that schools should select students according to their academic abilities, while others believe that it is better to have students with different abilities studying together.

The issue of whether academic abilities should be served as an exclusive standard in terms of selecting students or not has been heated discussed. In my opinion, taking an overall view of students’ diverse capabilities should be encouraged.

Admittedly, academic abilities seems to play a dominant role on one’s career path since people now are doing more brain work during work time than manual labor. That means employers tend to  take candidates’ academic scores as important references before they have any work experience. Under this circumstance, it is understandable that some schools regard the proficiency of academic subjects as their sole basis of admission.

However, opponents would counter that students with inadequate academic skills might possess other latent talents which certainly deserve to be further developed at schools. It is not uncommon that a wide range of students present great insight in academic field, however, are capable of handling basic problems. This phenomenon penetratingly revealed the disconnection between theory and reality. More importantly, it displayed the weakness of academy-oriented educational system. As for individuals, if schools only choosing students equipped with high academic skills, students would work flat out in order to get an ace at every academic exam. It might stifle students’ imagination and creation and impede their further progress.

From my point of view, the proficiency of academic study, as a benchmark for one of varied abilities in one’s study life, renders very limited assistance for one individual’s whole life. Each individual has multitudinous opportunities to become anyone as long as it is available to fully exploit his potentials and achieve an all-round development at a school.

The issue of whether academic abilities should be served as an exclusive standard to select students or not is of great concern. As for me, taking a comprehensive assessment of students’ diverse capabilities should be encouraged.

Depending on your point of view, this trend can be spun as an effective approach to cater to the society’s needs or a barrier for one’s all-round development. On the one hand, admittedly, academic abilities play a dominant role in one’s career path. Because nowadays most jobs require more mental, rather than manual, labor. This helps explain employers take candidates’ academic scores as relevant references before they have any work experience. Under these circumstances, it is understandable that some schools regard the proformance of academic subjects as their sole basis of admission.

On the other hand, individuals lack academic skills, some may argue, are likely to have other latent talents, which certainly deserve a further development at schools. Besides, it is not uncommon that a group of students who present a great insight in the academic field, however, are incapable of handling fundamental problems. This phenomenon alarmingly revealed the disconnection between theory and reality. More importantly, it displayed the weakness of the academy-first educational system. As for individuals, if schools only choose students equipped with high academic skills, students would work flat out to get an ace at every academic exam. It might stifle students’ imagination and creation and impede their further progress.

In my opinion, the intellience in academic study, as a benchmark of one of hundreds of abilities in one’s whole life, renders minimal assistance in the long term. Each student has multitudinous opportunities to become anyone as long as the school serve as a platform where students’ potential can be fully exploited.
