It is believed that secondary school children should study international news as one of their school subjects. Others think that this is a waste of valuable school time. Discuss both views and give your opinions.

Opinions about whether international events ought to be taught at secondary schools vary from person to person. Although I accept that to some extent foreign news offers useful information, I believe that learning about what happened overseas at school is pretty valueless for these children and instead they should focus school time on other subjects.

Firstly, studying overseas news will occupy the amount of school time spent on academic learning, thus wasting limited time invested in theoretical knowledge. Secondary school students’ top priority is to equip themselves with academic knowledge, which requires a large amount of time and is scarce in international news. If a certain amount of school time were allotted to external news, these students would face a reduction in time spent on textbooks.

Moreover, the knowledge of foreign events contributes negligibly to these students’ academic performance, hence squandering cherished time dedicated to improvements in school records. Secondary school students are mentally immature, therefore requiring professional teachers’ supervision, which will benefit these students’ academic performance. A poor performance at school will put the corresponding student in an inferior position in employment markets.

That is not to say that parents and teachers are supposed to impose a ban on these students’ learning of international news. Indeed, overseas knowledge can broaden these juvenile children’s horizons. However, they are not supposed to learn related information at school.

In conclusion, secondary students should devote their school time to learning academic lessons. Meanwhile, they should be allowed to learn external news after school.
