Should the government focus more on preserving the natural environment and less on economic development?

With the rapid development and high industrialization of modern society, how to balance the relationship between protecting the environment and economic growth has become a hot-debated topic. In my opinion, preserving the environment is no less important than economic growth.

First, keeping a healthy environment is imperative for the earth. On the one hand, due to global warming, lots of species are facing extinction. Sea levels are rising, and forests are disappearing. If we do not take action to protect the environment, then biodiversity will decrease dramatically. Thus, the earth will become harsher and more inhabitable for animals. On the other hand, human beings, who stand at the top of the food chain, also suffer from a bad environment. For instance, the overall health conditions of citizens in Beijing, the capital of China, are not promising. Due to air pollution exhausted by surrounding factories and millions of private cars, many people worry about air quality and their health. According to the statistical data from China Daily, the rates of heart and lung disease have been climbing since 2010. Therefore, the government must preserve the natural environment, which will not only benefit animals but also benefit ourselves.

However, stimulating economic growth is also associated with the well-being of society. Economic development is a crucial determinant of people’s living standards. For example, my grandparents lived a poor life fifty years ago. Not only them, but almost every Chinese person also was not able to earn money at that time. As a result, they could not attend school and spent all their life on a farm. On the contrary, with the development of the economy, our life is much better than fifty years ago. We have nine-year compulsory education, which means that no matter one child is wealthy or not, he or she could have a chance to receive education. Thus, we can see that economic development play an essential role in improving people’s living standard.
