The dormitory is both a personal and public section in a university. As the world is divided into distinctive national countries, people in the same country share the same values and cultures, which may conflict with other countries. However, from my perspective, we can benefit a lot from living with a native student as an international student.

In the first place, living with American roommates can accumulate our accommodation process. We foreign students may be too used to our own lifestyle to fit ourselves into a different culture, so a native roommate can help us in the transition. We may know little about some rites and polite expressions, consulting and modifying our roommate can avoid unnecessary misunderstandings.

Secondly, learning English with textbooks can be an effective way to deal with examinations, but it can be deficient if that’s the only way to learn a foreign language. Considering the language environment in our study place, we’d better communicate with our American roommates for advanced language learning levels. And the more we learn, the less barrier we may come across when we talk with local people. For instance, when we want to ask for an extension or enquire how to use library databases, we can use English fluently to make ourselves understand.

All in all, as the saying goes, a good beginning is half success. Having an American roommate can be a good choice for our university life, due to they are more familiar with the language, the culture, especially the campus tradition than overseas students. We can gain a good beginning as well as a beautiful international friendship with a native roommate.
