Unpaid community service certainly benefits the development of personality high school students in some aspects. Some people recommend this should be a compulsory part of high school programs. In my opinion, compulsory may lead students to be stressful and unpleasant because of the loss of the right to choose options by themselves, which may cause negative effects.

Voluntary work is generally motivated by volunteers themselves and not forced by school or other people. It is a more natural way for students to choose unpaid community service as access to take more responsibilities for society. If schools have compulsory programmes like voluntary work, students are more likely to do this work with an improper goal to get high grades rather than help other people. They could forget the essentials of unpaid community service because of the importance of the accomplishment of the task.

Some students may have difficulties to join in unpaid community service. We need to consider the real world for some students who live in poverty and who are disabled. Unpaid service can waste the time for poor students to take a part-time job or help parents to do housework. They will need more time and energy to balance their life. For disabled students, they may feel embarrassed and stressed to quit from those programmes, which may contribute to a mistake conception that they no longer have the ability to help other people.

Above all, whether doing unpaid community service is an option for students themselves, the school should provide more opportunities for students to choose but they would better not regulate students to be volunteering as a compulsory course.
