Some people think painting and drawing are as important as other subjects, so they should be compulsory high school education. To what extent do you agree or disagree

The importance of art education is receiving more attention, and some people argue that the painting and drawing should be as compulsory subjects in high school. Although making these relevant courses compulsory can bring some benefits, in my opinion, adopting this kind of measure is too radical as now.

On the one hand, students can have more access to well-rounded education by improving the position of art courses in the education system. Painting and drawing are distinct from mathematics or physics and associated with a lot of practical training, which can expand students’ skill set. The training of sketch, for example, enable students to enhance the ability to capture details. Furthermore, these abilities can influence students in the long run, helping them cultivate the sense of beauty and be better at perceiving objects and things in their lives. If art courses are not compulsory, these benefits would not be realized completely.

On the other hand, however, there are still a series of issues for the measure of compulsory art education. For students, the art education requires a large amount of time and effort and, more importantly, the talent. Compulsory art courses mean that students have to compress the time of learning other subjects to conduct the art training, and the students who are not better at it would feel challenged and frustrated to their studies. In the aspect of society, it is impractical to require all high schools to implement the measure. The art teaching is based on professional teachers and relevant education facilities such as drawing boards, painting rooms, and art models. For most high schools in the undeveloped regions, it is hard to carry out the complete art education due to their poor educational resources, which will aggravate the education inequity and cause further social problems. Therefore, taking art courses as compulsory subjects need more thoughts.
