At universities and colleges, sports and social activities are just as important as classes and libraries and should receive equal financial support. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Some people claim that universities should allocate more expenditure to educational facilities like classes, libraries and electronic resources. Admittedly, as academic institutions, universities do have the obligation to give higher priority to academic. However, contrary to what many people believe, I would argue that sports and extra-curricular activities are supposed to be treated equally with academic facilities.

Gyms and playgrounds are flawless places for students to alleviate their pressure. In today’s society, the source of pressure is multifaceted. Specifically, students are susceptible to peer pressure, school bullying, personality clash, and because of this, negative emotions and pressure initiate accumulation inadvertently. If parents and universities do not curb it effectively, students would go astray easily. By doing exercises in gym centers, universities could provide a valuable opportunity for students to release pressure.

Learning is not only a mental work but also a manual work, which means the promotion of willpower and tenacity is as essential as studying in classes or libraries. Doing workouts not only will students upgrade their cardiovascular and muscular strength, endurance, flexibility and hand-eye coordination, but they will also learn perseverance, goal-setting and coping skills to deal with success and failure. Studying is a lifelong process. Without persistence, in other words, a student could not finish his/her schoolwork or could be eliminated by entrance examination simply, let alone survive in today’s society saturated with fierce competitions. Therefore, doing exercises do better for studying.

You can learn theoretical knowledge from classes but there are still many skills you can not cultivate just rely on books: socialization and rhetoric. Undoubtedly, a university is society in miniature. Thus, gym centers could be an important medium for students to exchange ideas, foster friendship, collaborate with other students through communication. During this process, social skills could be nurtured markedly. Eventually, we might be the biggest beneficiary in our future by broadening networks in gym centers.

In conclusion, it is vital to promote students’ physical, mental and emotional advancement. That is to say, there is nothing wrong with universities to finance extra-curricular activities.
