The charts below show the proportions of British students at one university in England who were able to speak other languages in addition to English, in 2000 and 2010.

The table illustrates the language ability of British undergraduates at the same college, from 2000 to 2010. It is clearly that more and more students have learnt a foreign language.

Apart from English, most of these students are bilingual. Comparing with other languages, Spanish obviously was the most popular among such students at 30% in 2000, and then this figure raised to 35% after 10 years. Merely 10% of all students could speak only German and English in both 2000 and 2010.

Meanwhile, proportion for students who were only able to speak French and all other languages (in addition to English) shared quite some similarities at 15% and 10% respectively. However, while individuals who could speak French declined to 10%, there is an increasing ratio of trilingual students to 20% in a period of 10 years. In contrast, the proportion of students who could speak English decreased, from 20% to 10%.

In general, during a decade from 2000, those British undergraduates seemed to do better in speak foreign languages.
