The following appeared in an article in the Grandview Beacon.

“For many years the city of Grandview has provided annual funding for the Grandview Symphony. Last year, however, private contributions to the symphony increased by 200 percent and attendance at the symphony’s concerts-in-the-park series doubled. The symphony has also announced an increase in ticket prices for next year. Given such developments, some city commissioners argue that the symphony can now be fully self-supporting, and they recommend that funding for the symphony be eliminated from next year’s budget.”

Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the recommendation and the argument on which it is based are reasonable. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation.

The article mentions that some city commissioners suggest eliminating the Grandview Symphony’s budget for some reasons. However, these reasons should be explained to make them convincible.

Barring the government’s donation, Symphony also has other donations from privacy contributions. City commissioners cut the budget because privacy contributions increased by 200 percent. But in the article, we can’t know how valuable a 200 percent increase is. What is the exact total contribution, and the base number of the private contribution? Maybe the privacy donation was only $100 last year and became $200 this year. That, the increase in donations doesn’t impact the revenue of Symphony so much. The commissioners should provide the real number before and after, so the change can be more clear.

The commissioners mention that attendance at the symphony’s concerts-in-the-park series doubled. However, they don’t provide the data that compare with which one. The data may be compared to the one when the symphony held up concert-in-the-park the first time, and then didn’t appeal to many people because they were not famous enough. This must be explained to make the argument more convincing.

Moreover, whether the concert-in-the-park is free or not is important. If the concert is free, it may have some audiences who just pass by or appeal by the market of stuff but not the concert. When the concert charges, these audiences will not exist. The commissioners have to provide the details about the concert, especially whether it was free or not.

The commissioners also mention that the increase in ticket prices can make the symphony to be self-supporting. But we have no idea why the symphony decided to change its prices. They may face a financial crisis so the symphony can’t help but increases the ticket prices. Also, the article doesn’t mention which level the prices change. Maybe the level of change completely can’t increase the symphony’s revenue, just because the cost of house rent and fees increase, they have to raise the prices to cover them.

According to the question above, the commissioners should provide more data or details to reclaim their argument.
