TOEFL Writing Topic: The government should support research even if it has no practical use?

Researches which seem to have no practical use today may become meaningful, or even revolutionary as time goes by.Nobody have the ability to predict precisely which kind of research will be the most lucrative one. What we can do is to give our best and manage to make good use of the fund on our hands. Nowadays, almost every world-power are dedicating numerous resources to space exploration, which, from today’s perspective, sounds like a waste of tax revenue. Nonetheless, none can guarantee that our persistence would not pay off. Once we find another planet offering a suitable environment for human, then the profit is much greater in comparison with the input.

Since some advanced scientific research cannot produce immediate benefits, individuals or companies are unlikely to be interested, and governments’ supports may be the only chance for this kind of researches. It is that kind of project that can only be supported by the whole country, which means, the government. These research, like big planes, high-speed trains, require a considerable amount of money and need take a long term to gain any. As a consequence, private companies are unable to afford them. So, at this time, if the administration is reluctant to lean a helping hand, these industries never have the opportunity of substantial progress.

Besides requiring money and resources, advanced researches also involve a great number of specialists and experts, and only governments have the power to gather so many talents. This point can be best illustrated with example of Manhattan Project in the U.S. When World War Two rage at every corner of Europe, U.S. government attracted those most intelligent brains to America via their plan of nuclear weapon research, including the most well-known one, Einstein. As we can see, such great achievements can only be done by the government.Without the countless endeavor of U.S. government, European scientists and experts may not choose to travel this long distance. And due to so many talents, America soon became the most powerful nation in this world.
