The most important characteristic of a successful politician or a leader is good communication skills.
Different people have different understandings of being a successful politician or a leader. In general, people claim that a successful leader should have abilities others do not have. For students, a monitor should have good scores, while for adults, their leaders can make the company more money. However, I assert that a successful leader ought to have good communication skills. There are several reasons why I propose that.
First, having good communication skills would make other people trust this leader. In a company, we have to contact others to do business. The sales department has to communicate with the production department in case there are not enough products for sale. If the production department can not produce all the products the sales department has sold, there will be problems. Thus, the existence of a leader with great communication skills is very necessary. He can handle the problems between these departments fairly and make colleagues in these departments feel comfortable. For example, he will comfort people in the production department and find ways to help them produce enough objects before the deadline. Also, he will ask the sales department to keep in touch with the production department closely. Colleagues will trust him and believe that he will make a bigger contribution to the company under this man’s leadership. In contrast, a leader who is anxious and does not know how to communicate well with others will force the production department to work overtime, in order to produce enough objects. People in the production department will complain about this leader and do not trust him. A leader should not criticize his colleagues when they can not cope with their works. People always feel sad and lose motivation for work when being criticizing. Whereas, a leader who knows communication skills will take care of people’s emotion. Thus, it is important for a leader to be good at communication.
All in a word, having a good communication skill can help people be a successful politician or a leader.

What’s more, since people have the right to vote for leaders, people with fantastic communication skills are more likely to be a leader longer. My school, for example, elects monitors each year. We had two leaders last year. One of the leaders was very strict. Every time others did something bad, he would shout at them and punished them. However, people seldom listened to him and hated him. While the other leader, she would speak to them softly and use her communication skills to help people understood how bad their behaviors were. People all liked her. This year, the girl becomes our leader again while the boy is no longer the leader. Since he is not a leader now, we can not say he is a successful leader. Whereas, the girl, who has great communication skills, is championed by many students.
Indeed, many people think that if they are experts in one area, they will be no doubted to be successful leaders. In my opinion, this is not true. First, it is rare for people to be completely mastering with some knowledge in an area. Second, many leaders in an area may not even know the knowledge about this area. Hence, having good communication skills is the most important characteristic.
