When we were young, we have always been told that ‘if the old dog barks, he gives counsel’ from the elder. It is true that many traditional ideals that elder people have sometime could be helpful in our daily life. While I agree that some conventional values indeed help us in modern life, I think some of them are outdated.

On the one hand, some traditional views and values are still applicable to the modern world. For example, older generation attach great importance to hard working and never quit, and these qualities can help us to gain more benefits at work or school and surely important for us in today’s competitive world. Other characteristics that are seen as conventional are punctuality, politeness and so on. People with these characteristics are always seen as great person.

On the other hand, some of the ideas that elderly people have about how to live a life are not instructive for younger generation. In the past, for example, people tend to find a secure job as a civil servant or an employee of state-owned enterprises. But today’s people expect a job that not only can pay their bills, but also can full-fill their personal goals. And the greatest conflict between the old and the young is gender roles. In the past, men and women shoulder the different social responsibilities that men should feed his family and women should be a housewife. However, these kinds of prejudice are no longer acceptable for most younger people.

In conclusion, although the views of older people may sometimes seem outdated in today’s world, we should not leave all traditions behind.
