Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is to travel or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language. Discuss both these views and give your opinion.

Nowadays, more and more people begin to learn multiple languages. Some think individuals only study foreign languages for job or vacation reasons while others don’t agree. In my opinion, language learners can contain various purposes to study foreign languages.

It is undeniable that many people learn more languages to pursue a better job or holiday. Compared with monolingual workers, people with multilingual skills have more working opportunities. For example, Chinese people who can speak English fluently can not only work in Chinese companies but also British companies. What’s more, learning a native language can make travel more comfortable and convenient. People who can speak German have less chance to get lost there as they can ask native speakers how to go to their targeted destination.

On the other hand, life is not only made by work and travel. Many other matters can also encourage people to learn a foreign language. Individuals may want to learn about one country’s culture and customs. As a literature student, I study French because I enjoy French poetry. Moreover, for some countries, knowing a foreign language can be a way to display one’s economic capability. For example, only rich people in India can afford Chinese lessons for their children. Sometimes, the family tie makes people learn different languages. Pupils who are hybrids have to be bilingual to communicate with both of their parents.

In conclusion, when deciding whether to study a new language or not, people always consider multiple perspectives. Sometimes, interest is the most critical factor in supporting people to act.
