    The table below shows the proportion of different categories of families living in poverty in Australia in 1999.

    The table compares different living patterns in terms of the percentage of people from each household type living in poverty in Australia in the year 1999.

    It is clear that 11% of all households, comprising almost two million people, were in this position. However the type of sole parent has the largest proportion of all types in the table, with 21%.

    In the table, older people were generally less living in poverty, only 4% for aged couple, and 6% for single aged person. By comparing single people and couples, couples generally tended to be better, 7% for couple without children, and 12% for couple with children.

    The proportion of couple with children got higher poverty level than those without children, 12% for couple with children. From the entire table, the households of single people and those with children were more likely to be living in poverty than those consisting of couples.
