The reading and the lecture are both about what made the odd sound under the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean between the 1960s to 1980s. The author of the reading believes three possible theories which are from orca whales, from giant squid, or from military practice. However, the lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. She is of the opinion that these statements are faulty.

To begin with, the author argues that strange sound was made by the male and female orca whales. The article also mentions the sound was similar to the moment in which the female whale tried to appeal male whale. The specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. She claims that the area which detected the sound was the same as the whale active. Additionally, she points out that the sound was detected under the water while whales were living on the surface of water. This made it impossible to hear the sound.

Secondly, the writer suggests that the giant squid produced the sound. In the article, even though it would be hard to detect the sound come from squid due to its soft body structure, it was still possible for squid to release sound. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by doubting that the timing of detecting was not continuous. She elaborates on this by bringing up the point that the odd sound was heard around the 1970s and disappeared in the 1980s; however, the squid was always live there without any migration.

Finally, the author posits that military technology created sound. Moreover, in the article, it is stated that this technology was designed not to detect by sonar while might emitting some froglike sounds unintentionally. In contrast, the lecture’s position is that the sound did not come from military practice since submarine could not change direction so quickly. She notes that if there were military technology applied underwater, there must be some engine noise created during processing. Obviously, there was no engine noise detected.
