The lecture apparently disagrees with what is stated in the paragraph. According to the passage, giving an option of working a four-day workweek will benefit not only the economy but also companies and employees. On the contrary, the professor contends that a further scrutiny would reveal how fragile the argument is. And he provides several evidences to strengthen his perspective.

First and foremost, the article claims that the shorter workweek would increase company profits. However, the speaker argues that it will not help companies make more profits, but instead make companies spend even more money. In other word, company cannot save some money by employing more workers who will work less time and thus make fewer costly errors, because employing more workers means more trainings and benefits needed for these workers, and thus more money needs to be spent. Given above-mentioned grave mistakes, the author’s statement is proved to be specious.

Moreover, although the paragraph indicates that this option can reduce unemployment rates, the professor challenges that it won’t make employment rate any increase. Since adding any jobs can lead additional expenses to the company, the company might choose other methods to cover the lost time, methods including increase the expectation for four-days works to make them finish the same work as the five-days workers do. This measurement will definitely make the four-day work more unpleasant. Based on this point, the lecture clearly refutes the passage.

Last but not least, the reading demonstrates that the option would be better for individual employees, whereas the professor suggests that it will actually increase the risk of reducing the employees’ life quality, which is due to the fact that four-days workers will have a greater risk to lose their job because of their less working time. Besides, they will miss some promotion opportunities because the managers are needed to supervise the company all the time.
