In the reading material, the author cites three ways to solve the water salinity problem. Nevertheless, the lecturer in the listening material counteracts all of the ways and opposes the points in the reading material.

First and foremost, the author argues that direct removal of salt from the lake’s water in special desalination facilities may help solve the problem. However, the lecturer offers an opposite stand that it may present a lot of new problems as well, since it can do harm to people’s health. When this process happens, there will be some other types of chemicals which are produced. Furthermore, some chemicals may be toxic and they are harmful to people.

In addition, the lecturer casts doubt on the author’s another way that diluting the salt level in the lake with water from the ocean, as water in the Pacific Ocean is 20 percent less salty than water in the lake. And the lecturer demonstrates that this process may need the government to build pipe lines or canals to get the water from lake. In that situation, the government have to spend a lot of money to achieve the project because there is about 100 kilometers from the ocean to the lake, which is such a long distance.

Finally, the author’s third way is that constructing walls to divide the lake into several sections, and salinity will be allowed to increase in the small section while the salinity will be reduced in the main and the largest section. However, this way is also counteracted by the lecturer who points out that it is not able to work very long, since there will be frequent natural activities such as earthquakes. In that case, the wall will be destroyed by such earthquakes, Meanwhile, the water in the main and the largest section and the water in the small section will mix which will make this way unpractical.
