Universities should accept equal numbers of male and female students in every subject. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

As gender gap narrows, people nowadays have equal access to education. However, as far as effectiveness and equality are concerned, I disagree with the idea that each subject should admit the same numbers of male and female students.

The main reason is that educational resources are not effectively utilized under this practice. Experienced professors are hired and government funds are invested with the aim of cultivating students who have a talent in a particular field. In this way, they can become useful members of the society in the future. However, different genders share different talents. For example, males are better at mathematics and computer science, while females are more talented at literature and language. If gender quotas were set in these subjects, then some talented students would be forced to choose other subjects they dislike, which is definitely a loss to the society.

Also, although admitting equal numbers of each gender seems to address the problem of gender discrimination, it is not a fair criterion for individuals. Admission to university subjects should only rely on students’ academic abilities instead of gender. Students who get a high grade in the aptitude test should be awarded with the right to choose their subjects.  Only in this way, students will make effort to study hard for their aspiration since they realize that competence is the sole standard.

In conclusion, although discrimination on the grounds of sex should be prohibited in education, it is an extreme and wrong practice to accept equal numbers of female and male students.
