Universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student’s field of study. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position.

Nowadays, someone claims that apart from the major course students attend, they should also take some courses outside their major curriculum. To discuss this proposition, one should first distinguish the level of the university education, as it is divided into undergraduate programs and graduate programs, which are totally different from each other. From where I am standing, students should take a number of courses outside their field of study in the undergraduate study, but for the graduate study it is better to exclusively focus onto their major courses.

Because of the lack of depth in the undergraduate study, it is reasonable to require students to take courses beside their field of study. By doing so, universities can greatly broaden their students’ horizon among several fields, which can not only sharpen their knowledge related to other study of field, but may only cultivate their interest beside their major, thus leading to an innovative profession. For example, many experts in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence was once majored in Electrical Engineering like Andrew Ng, and many universities establish the independent Machine Learning or Artificial Intelligence undergraduate program or graduate program.

However, for the study of graduate programs, it is better to exclusively concentrate their attention on the student’s field of study. Attending courses outside their field of study seems unhelpful to their study but may even distract their attention from their thesis study. After all, graduate study is different from undergraduate study for that it is motivated by scientific researches not by course-work. So additional unrelated courses appear to be of little value to accelerate the study.

Some people may argue that the differences between graduate study and undergraduate study may not be that clear. Therefore, graduate study should also take an amount of courses outside their field of study, which might in return help students have a better or creative understanding of their main field. Also, some fields of study involves several other fields such as Machine Learning, if we solemnly focus on the theoretical knowledge of it but turn a blind eye to its application which involves the study of Electrical Engineering, one may fail to combine theory and practice in his or her study and he or she cannot apply knowledge of Machine Learning into our daily life. As a result, the study of Machine Learning may seem useless as it cannot serve humanlike and is only some mathematical formula in the textbooks.

In conclusion, universities should require undergraduate students to attend a variety of courses impertinent to their main field of study, but for graduate students they should concentrate on the courses that related to their researches.
