Some people believe that unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of high school programmes (for example working for a charity, improving the neighbourhood or teaching sports to younger children).

In modern society, there is an increasing number of opinions argue that senior high school students should participate in a voluntary job during school. While the proposal regarding taking part in a voluntary job as an educational obligation has some drawbacks, it also has many benefits. What I argue is that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.

Firstly, joining voluntary work enables senior high school students to shoulder their social responsibility. This is because each citizen can realize that everyone is a crucial part of the community, especially when they gained aid from their neighbors, and then they devote themselves to assisting other in-need individuals. Thus, being a volunteer provide those students with a chance to realize their social duties.

Meanwhile, being a volunteer plays an essential role in raising someone’s communication skills. For instance, when Jack Ma, the previous CEO of Alibaba in China, was a high school student, he once acted as a free guide for foreigners who visited Hangzhou. Eventually, from that experience, what Jack Ma obtained was not only broad horizons from various tourists from all over the world but also the communication skills.

Those who harbor the view that working in charities harms high school students would believe that it may waste those students’ time and energy, especially for those who possess quite limited time due to preparing for the college entrance examination. Yet, being a volunteer will benefit those students in the long term.

In conclusion, adding the charitable service compulsorily to the educational system is imperative. Meanwhile, relevant regulations must be enacted to reach a reasonable balance between time spent on charity versus academic learning.
