    What is most important for a high school teacher?

    – The ability to help students plan for their future

    – The ability to find students who need help most and help them

    – To teach students how to learn outside the classroom

     

    Nowadays, there is more and more debate about what is the essential ability for high school teacher. I believe that this would definitely be the ability to help students plan for future.

    High school kids go through a lot of physical and emotional changes on their way from child to adult. As part of this transition, they start to think beyond present.  However, even though they have such awareness, they don’t know how to plan for it, like what resources are available. Luckily, this is where teachers can give some help. Let’s take one of my friends as an example. He wants to be a doctor after graduating from college, but he didn’t have enough money for medical school, plus he was unwilling to take out student loan. As he was in a sorry plight, his teacher came up with an idea for him: join the military to receive educational benefit upon leaving. Now he is studying at medical school and thrilled that he can pursue his dream. He would have given up if it had not been for a creative teacher who knew possible options and was able to develop a satisfactory solution.

    In addition, there can be real, serious issues of lacking interests in study among high school students. Different from adults, who can focus on tedious job, teens easily get bored. If teens aren’t interested, they won’t bother trying to fake it. They will just get on with whatever they want to do. So, it’s important for high school teachers to make sure students are interested in the lesson. How to do that? I think the best way is to let students think about their own future and find inner motivations. Suppose that if one student sets his mind to be an engineer and fully understands the job’s requirement under his teacher’s advice, he will definitely give his whole attention to math and physic class.

    From those reasons, we can safely conclude that for students’ overall development, helping them plan for their future is the most crucial ability that high school teacher should have.
