Today, people tend to use English to chat with each other. English is widely considered as a global language, while some people hold the view that it may limit the development of other languages. I still believe the spread of English brings lots of benefits.

To begin with, the widespread use of English improves efficiency. Nowadays, with the speeding of globalization, it promotes the cooperation of companies from various countries. Meanwhile, since it saves the time to translate various languages, using English is beneficial to guarantee the quality and speed of the talk. What’s more, using English is quite convenient for people to learn much more information and broaden their horizons. For example, people in China are quite interested in learning about the latest news in foreign countries. If they want to have a simple understanding of matters in foreign countries, the easiest way is to learn English so that people can know the meaning of news written by journalists in foreign countries.

However, everything has two sides. There are also some drawbacks when considering English as a global language. For instance, it may impose some threats to the development of people’s mother tongue, which means people may focus on learning English while neglecting their native language. As a consequence, the linguistic and cultural diversity can be affected a lot.

In conclusion, regarding English as a ‘global language’ is reasonable. It brings some benefits to the cooperation of companies and help people learn a large scale of news from many countries. By contrast, it may impose a strain on cultural diversity.
