April 10, 2020 at 3:23 pmPeople have different views about whether the government should raise the tax for fast food or not. I support that a higher tax could mitigate the problems caused by fast food.
On the one hand, people need an outside force to curb their appetite for an unhealthy diet. To begin with, they would have little self-control when exposing to temptations. With fast food increasingly involving in our life, almost every citizen has tried this type of food despite being aware of the harm. Furthermore, today residents usually work overtime to earn more money, so they would have less time to do home cooking. Thereby increasing people resort to convenience food or get a takeaway. Widely accepted, the higher the price of fast food is, the fewer people could afford it. Thus raising the tax could help them cut down reliance on this tasty but harmful food.
On the other hand, it should be the government’s responsibility to resist excessive junk food. This is because if a growing number of citizens had medical conditions, the burdens of the healthcare services system would zoom over. The government would have to budget a multitude of funds towards the healthcare system. Additionally, other vital fields, such as public education and infrastructure construction, also need huge investments. In this way, a higher tax of fast food could not only increase the revenue but also cost-effectively alleviate the pressure of the medical system.
To summarize, I believe that increasing tax for the fast food could considerably reduce people’s dependence on it.
