Spending time on educating children is changing time by time. Personally, I believe parents nowadays spend more time on children’s education than before. I feel this way for three reasons, I will explore in the following essay.

To begin with, many parents nowadays have fewer children. In the past, one family might have five or more children who needed to be raised, parents spend their time on each one. As a result, none of the children receive full care from their parents. My father is a compelling example of this. In my grandparents’ time, they raised ten kids at the same time. My father is the oldest child of all and he had the responsibility for taking care of his sisters and brothers, which caused him having no time to accept education in the elementary school.

Secondly, there are more educational resources than in the past. Every parent wants their children to be more competitive. Therefore, more and more cram schools or talented-learning schools are emerging nowadays. For example, I have been learning English for more than ten years since as a child I recognized the importance of this world language. My parents believed that my English ability is better than my peers’, which would have more opportunities to obtain better jobs in the future.

Finally, the working styles are changing now. People needed to go to the company or factory to work, and the working time was fixed. However, technology makes people have different living styles, which come to the so-called so-ho coworkers. I will take my brother as an example. He is a product designer, and most of his time is sitting in front of his computer to do the design. He uploads his work on the internet instead of bringing it to the office. This working style makes him work at home. As a result, he has more time to take care of his son. He can let his son study around him and solve every problem immediately.

In conclusion, I am of the opinion that parents are spending more time joining their children’s education. This is because the fewer children in one family gain more care, parents keen their children for more competition, and working style shifts the way of educating kids.

The reading and the lecture are both discussing whether the burning mirror existed in ancient time or not. The author of the reading feels negative about using the burning mirror by the Greeks. However, the lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. She is of the opinion that these explanations are faulty.

First of all, the author argues that the burning mirror was not an advanced tool. The article also mentions that using this tool is quite complicated, which involved a specific precise parabolic curvature. The specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. She claims that the Greek people understood the principle about the parabolic curvature fairly well. Additionally, she says that the Greeks could use small pieces of copper to construct the burning mirror.

Secondly, the writer suggests that it takes 10 minutes to cause a fire while using the burning mirror. In the article, the author denies that Roman people could stay in the same position for a long enough time to set it on fire. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning that there were other material which was used to construct the ship could improve efficiency. She elaborates this idea by bringing up the point that the pitch, a sticker thing, could enhance the time while focusing the energy.

Finally, the author posits that flaming arrows were more ubiquitous as a weapon at that time. Moreover, the article believed that not only burning mirrors but also flaming arrows could achieve the same efficacy. In contrast, the lecturer’s position is that flaming arrows were too common to be recognized. She notes that the burning mirror would surprise the enemy since no one had ever seen a mirror which could cause a fire. [286 words]
