Friendships are essential to one’s mental health. Maintaining relationships with old friends gives people support in times of difficulty, while making new friends is a precious opportunity to explore different things. In my opinion, the ability to maintain friendships and the ability to make new friends are of equal importance for happiness.

First of all, it is pleasant to maintain friendships with others for a long time. Since you have known each other for years, you are familiar with others’ personalities and habits. It is much easier for you to stay together and enjoy yourselves, like having afternoon tea, drinking in your favorite bars and doing some sports, etc. Whenever you feel disappointed or frustrated, you can turn to your friends. Often, they can offer the best comfort and makes you happy again. Also, old friends usually have a lot of beautiful memories together. It makes people feel relaxed to recall these lovely moments, especially with the same friends.

Though maintaining old friends is quite important, we cannot neglect the significance of making new friends. If one has the ability to make new friends easily, he is more likely to get in touch with different fields. Thus, he may live an enriched life and feel happier. When I went to university, I immediately made a new friend who is good at sports. He introduced his interests and opened a door for me. In the past, I was totally a couch potato. But with the encouragement of him, I developed my interests in sports and had a healthier life. Whenever I have difficulties in my life, I will do some exercise, releasing stress.

In summary, it is significant for people to have the ability to keep friendships with old friends and the ability to make new friends because both old and new friends are treasures in our lives. Only with the company of friends, can we live a happy and meaningful life.

Some school-age children are offered money by their parents for high scores obtained in exams. People supporting this practice argue that money can inspire them. For example, people may work harder for a higher salary. Also, giving children money can help them develop money management skills at an early age. In my opinion, it is not good to offer pure material rewards for high marks because the effectiveness of such rewards is unknown. Besides, children are usually not self-restraint enough to manage money properly.

First of all, the inspiring effect of money is uncertain. Though adults are concerned with money, children may have different feelings about it. Playing with toys, friends and family are usually more attractive than getting some money.

Moreover, children should study out of their interests instead of money. Only sincere love for something can keep people digging deeper. Children should try to find out their favorite subjects in school so that they can choose a suitable major in the university and prepare for their future careers. Developing personal interests is a stepping stone to their future development and success. If children were encouraged by material rewards at an early age, they might lack the opportunity to explore different subjects out of interest. Parents who inspire their children with money are lazy and irresponsible, though it is convenient to do so. It is better for parents to help children develop interests and overcome difficulties of studying, as this is helpful in the long run.

Last but not least, children may manage and view money improperly. On one hand, children need instructions on how to use money properly, like spending it on meaningful things. Usually, parents who give money for high scores do not limit the ways of spending it, making children more likely to waste money. On the other hand, children may overvalue the importance of money. They may feel that making money is the most important goal in life. As a result, they may work hard all day long to get more money when they grow up, neglecting family and friends.

In summary, I think it is not a good idea to incentivize children with money. Parents should use other ways to develop children’s interests in studying, like sharing interesting stories with them.

Maintaining a permanent human presence on Venus is difficult but possible. A station floating 50 kilometers up in the atmosphere can be built to solve the problem of atmospheric pressure and lack of water, oxygen and sunlight.

The first reason is that in higher space, the atmospheric pressure is lower. At 50 kilometers above the ground, the atmospheric pressure is almost the same as that of Earth. If we establish a floating station there, human beings can survive. Thus, we can solve the problem of bearing great pressure.

Second, though there is no water or oxygen on Venus, the planet’s atmosphere contains other chemicals, like carbon dioxide and nitrogen. We can use these chemical materials to make water and oxygen which are needed in stations. Therefore, it is not necessary to transport water and oxygen from Earth.

Third, there is very little sunlight reaching the planet’s surface mainly because of the reflection of thick clouds and the obstruction of a dense layer of carbon dioxide. But at 50 kilometers above the ground, clouds are not very thick which reflect less sunlight. Also, sunlight reflected by clouds below the station can be used.

In summary, by building a floating station, it is possible for human beings to solve the problems mentioned and live on Venus.

Maintaining a permanent human presence on Venus is difficult but possible. A station floating 50 kilometers up in the atmosphere can be built to solve the problems mentioned in the reading passage.

First, in higher places, the atmospheric pressure is lower. At 50 kilometers above the ground, the atmospheric pressure is almost the same as that of Earth. If we establish a floating station there, human beings can survive. Thus, there is no need to worry about the difficulty of bearing the pressure.

Second, though there is no water or oxygen on Venus, the planet’s atmosphere contains other chemicals, like carbon dioxide and nitrogen. We can use these chemical materials to make water and oxygen needed in stations. It is not necessary to transport water and oxygen from Earth.

But at 50 kilometers above the ground, the clouds are not very thick reflecting less sunlight. Besides, sunlight reflected by clouds below the station can be used.

In summary, by building a floating station, it is possible to cast all doubts. Human beings can live on Venus.

    Two additional questions:

In this kind of scientific passages:

    1. Is it possible to use more passive voice?
    2. Is it possible to use longer sentences to clarify a point?

Some school-aged children are offered money by their parents for high scores gotten in exams. Money can inspire people sometimes. People supporting this method may also argue this can help children to develop the concept of money at an early age. However, as far as I am concerned, it is not good to offer pure material awards for high marks.

First of all, the stimulating effect of money is uncertain. Though adults are more concerned with money, school-age children may have different feelings about it. They usually feel playing with toys, friends and family are more attractive.

Besides, children should study out of interest instead of money. Only sincere likeness and devotedness can keep people walking further. Children should discover their favorite things and work on them. If they are encouraged by material rewards at an early age, they may lack the opportunity to explore different subjects out of interest. Parents who only give their children money are lazy and irresponsible. As parents, they have the duty to help children develop interests and overcome difficulties with study. They give up this responsibility by using money to inspire children, which is much more convenient.

In summary, I think it is not a good idea to inspire children with money. Parents should use other ways to develop children’s interests in studying.

An additional question: Why it’s better to use fewer adverbs? I think it’s a way to make a passage more fluent.
